The arts represent a diverse field that includes a variety of disciplines and practices. While many people associate art with studio activities or school classes, it can refer to any type of creative activity, including music, theater, dance, writing, and architecture.
But there are four primary categories or “forms” of art: literature, music, visual arts, and performing arts. In this article, I will explain each of these in detail.
Literature
Literature consists of works in language, both written and oral. It includes poetry, prose, and plays.
It also includes non-fiction essays, biographies, and historical works. As a form of art, literature is usually thought of as having literary quality, or craftsmanship, which connotes both imaginativeness and precision. It can convey, exploratory or imaginative ideas, or just a plain story.
Fiction, or works of invented or reconstructed stories, are a common form of literature. Stories often express an idea or moral through dynamics between characters, dialogue, and plot.
Authors frequently make use of symbols, imagery, and metaphors. Writers can also challenge their readers with symbolism, allegory, and other narrative devices. The purpose and quality of literature vary widely.
Novels and plays may be entertaining and successful, or involve a deep and personal exploration of the human experience—or both. Poetry often uses focused imagery to spark off a feeling or thought, or explore aesthetic experiences. Scholarly works produce carefully researched and objective information.
Satire is often used to mock social conventions or authority figures.
Music
Music encompasses a range of styles and sounds, including classical, jazz, and pop. It is a form of art created by arranging vocal or musical sounds, usually consisting of tones and melodies, into a harmonious composition.
Music often conveys moods, ideas, and stories. It is typically used as part of a ritual or celebrative experience, to accompany a film or a play, or to move or inspire an audience. Instrumentation and composition are great tools to create sound.
Instruments range in type and timbre, from plucked strings and bowed strings, to pianos and electric guitars. Through the combination of these instruments and combining different genres, composers are able to create unique and powerful sounds.
These can be further enhanced through the availability of modern technologies, such as digital sampling. There are also a variety of compositional techniques available. Songwriters have used “verse-chorus-bridge” structure, call-and-response phrasing, and even using classical forms, such as fugues, canons, and sonata form.
Visual Arts
Visual arts are art forms that include various mediums, such as drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and printmaking. Visual arts can take many forms, including materials such as graphite, charcoal, paint, and clay, as well as digital canvas. Visual artists often use elements such as color, shape, form, and texture to create their works.
They may also incorporate words, symbols, or mathematical equations. As a form of art, the purpose of visual arts is to express ideas and emotions, to create beauty, and to create meaning.
For many artists, the creative process begins before a stroke of the brush on canvas. They often meditate for inspiration and contemplate the subject matter, color, and composition elements to convey their message.
Shapes, lines, and textures can create dynamic compositions, similar to the way music is arranged. This mix of visual elements has the power to evoke emotion in the viewer. Photography is also a form of visual arts.
It is the art of making pictures through the use of a camera, or the production of light-sensitive material, such as a film or sensor. Although there are many different types of photography, such as portrait photography, wildlife photography, street photography, and macro photography, the main goal of photography is to capture the emotion and mood of a lack moment.
Landscape photographers may focus primarily on light and shadows, while portrait photographers typically pay closer attention to facial expressions and body language.
Performing Arts
Performing arts refers to any art form that is performed in front of an audience. It includes theater, dance, opera, music and any other form of art that uses movement.
It is an often challenging, exciting, and interactive form of expression for both performers and audiences. Performing arts often combine several art forms, such as music and dance, to create dramatic expressions. Theater is a story told through words and movements.
It is a collaborative endeavor that requires communication between the director, writer, and performers. It invites audiences to imagine, reflect, and connect emotionally to the characters and message of the story presented on stage.
Theater is usually divided into two genres; comedy and tragedy. Dance is often used to express emotion, stories, and ideas, and it can be composed of a range of styles and steps. There are traditional and classical dances, concert dance and folk dance, improvised and structured dances, narrative dances and abstract dances, and even a diverged mixture of all these elements.
Opera is a combination of acting, singing, and music. It is a dramatic story that is told through song, and sometimes through instrumental accompaniment.
Musicals are also a form of opera. They combine acting, song and oftentimes dance, to tell a story.
Conclusion
